The '80s Nostalgia

It has been observed, if not obvious, that recent blockbuster movies are of the '80s era. It is when the adults of today are once young. Box office shows that there are significant number of movies that are revival or completely patterned to its '80s original screenplay. Do you think this would trigger an '80s nostalgia?

Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon has recently crossed the $1B gross income mark worldwide with an estimated $1.07B gross sales and counting. In the '80s, this flick has been dominating the television networks from 1984 to 1987 and has a total of 98 23-minute episodes. This robot-transforms-to-cars concept has dominated the big screen around the globe with 3 epic installments.

Alice in Wonderland might have the difficulty in smashing the $1B mark if not with the '80s airing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from 1983 to 1984.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra before raking up $302 million of gross sales worldwide, this concept has already been featured starting 1985 with a total of 90 30-minute episodes. In the 1989 five-episode miniseries, a COBRA special mission force attempts to master the power of Dragonfire—a natural energy like electricity, only infinitely more powerful—found in the underground "lakes of fire." Their mission is to tap the most powerful, existing under Sorcerer's Mesa, an Native American site in New Mexico.

Alvin and the Chipmunks raked up to $361 million in gross ticket sales while its sequel Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel added up $443 million gross worldwide sales. Alvin, Simon and Theodore started their career at the hit TV seres of NBC, 1983 to early 1990. This Alvin Squeakquels will soon be added with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

These blockbuster films are just few of the many movies plotted or a direct remake of the '80s TV series. This will surely trigger more '80s hits that will surely hit the charts. Fancy the following movies in big screen?

He-Man and The Masters of the UniverseIn the mythical land of Eternia, the kingdom is fighting a great evil in the form of Skeletor and his minions. Prince Adam secretly uses the powers granted him to transform himself into He-Man and his scaredy-cat Cringer into the armored Battlecat. His famous battleshout is, "By the power of Greyskull, I Have The Power!" His friends and allies include Man-At-Arms and his daughter Teela, The Sorceress, and red-cloaked magician Orko. He-Man's sister, She-Ra, received her own show in 1985 after an appearance with He-Man in the movie "The Secret of the Sword."

Thudercats - Their planet, Thundera, was destroyed. The last of the Thunderans struggled to survive in space, pursued by a band of mutants. One lone ship escaped, carrying eight Thunderans. They searched for a nearby inhabitable planet, but the nearest is several years away. Jaga, their leader, commanded the small ship, while the others slept in stasis tubes for the long journey. Jaga died on their journey to Third Earth and their ship crashed on this planet. Soon they had allied themselves with several groups. Panthro designed a fortress. Mumm-Ra, the centuries-old embodiment of evil, along with the mutants that destroyed Thundera, are a constant threat. But Lion-O, the new Lord of the Thundercats, with his weapon the "Sword of Omens" give the Thundercats a standing chance. Lion-O, though appearing grown up, still has the mind of a child, due to his years in stasis on the ship. Other characters include the children, Wilykit and Wilykat, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, Jaga, and Snarf.

Care Bears - The Care Bears live in a cloud city named Care-A-Lot. From there, they monitor the world for bad feelings. Whenever something bad is sensed by the Care-O-Meter, they race down to earth in their Cloudmobiles and Rainbow Rollers to help. They meet to discuss important matters in the Hall of Caring, led by Tenderheart Bear.

These are just few of the many cartoon series most enjoyed in the '80s. All we have to do is wait until we see them come to life again in big screen.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank

06 August 2011

The local entertainment world came surprised by the blockbuster hit Ang Babae sa Septic Tank when it opened to public last August 03, 2011 (Wednesday). The movie proved to be a "blockbuster indie" after it overran hollywood movies like Larry Crowne and Rise of the Planet of the Apes which opened Wednesday and Thursday consecutively.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank stars Eugene Domingo and directed by Marlon Rivera. The movie chronicles a day in the life of three ambitious, passionate but misguided filmmakers as they set out to do a quick pre-prod at Starbucks, a courtesy call to their lead actress, Eugene Domingo, and an ocular inspection of their film’s major location, the Payatas dumpsite. Director Rainier, Producer Bingbong and Production Assistant Jocelyn are well-to-do, well-educated film school graduates who are dead set on making an Oscar worthy film. They believe they have a winning script, the energy and the drive to make their dreams come true. Like most filmmakers they know, they have devised a screenplay that will show the real essence of our culture: poverty.

This indie-blockbuster movie was crowned as Best Screenplay for Chris Martinez, Best Direction for Marlon Rivera, Best Performance of an Actress for Eugene Domingo and the film was awarded as Best Film and Audience Choice Award.

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank is currently shown at SM Cinema Megamall and select SM Cinemas in Metro Manila. With the good turn out of patrons, this movie will stay for weeks that will surely make history in the Indie Film Industry.
